You can find plenty of tutorials on coloring and shapwing eyebrows here, but what I ended up doing was using Ben Nye white cake makeup to cover my eyebrows and provide a good base, then using orange acrylic paint for color. I have very dark and thick eyebrows which made coloring them difficult. Awesomeguy’s Wig Cutting Tutorial Part 1 and Part 2 were very valuable resources. This was my first time cutting and styling a wig so I used lots of references and tutorials. To add in some of the lining Gaige has in her hair, I took a thick black sharpie and ran it through the wig. For extra fluffy pigtails, I cut bundles of hair, wrapped the ends, stuck them into the pipe, and glued them in. For extra rigidity, I poured glue into the PVC pipe so it would bond with the wig and keep them gravity defying. The wraps were made with a small length of PVC wrapped with black fabric (don’t remember what kind it was a remnant from Jo-Ann) and held in place with the metal strapping, bolt, and nuts. I went with styling a magnum because I wanted the wig to be fluffy in the back. The wig I used as a base is magnum from Arda Wigs (color pumpkin I wanted to use dark copper red, but it was out of stock) with wefts sewn in for the pigtails. I picked up a whole roll since it’s also used in other parts of her costume. The metal strapping is also easy to find and inexpensive. These are very easy to find at any hardware store. Note as a minor detail, the right pigtail (direction of the wearer) is a hex nut while the left pigtail is a square nut. Here is a reference for Gaige’s default head. We also kept drinking water and filled up Queadlunn’s water bottle every change we got. We kept assorted granola bars, beef jerky and pepperoni sticks, caloriemate, and some candy that we munched on every hour or so. Drink lots of water, make sure you eat well, get lots and lots of rest. I used denim with vinyl panels for the vest, and while comfortable, it wasn’t very breathable. Queadlunn was an immense help as he was there to carry my shotgun for me or help me out of my costume when I needed a break.Īlso keep in mind the materials for Gaige’s clothing. Also having someone to carry your stuff and help you get out of your props so you can rest is great too. Or if you’re going to, build the costume with more mobility in mind. Lesson learned? Don’t carry around a giant prop, have a costume with tons of accessories, and a mechanical arm all at once. It may not have weighed much, but I could feel the weight when I tried to sit on the floor and it felt great taking the holster off. The holster around the right ankle? I lost my foam wrench on Thursday and had to replace it with a real wrench.

Also with the aforementioned accessories and a grenade mod on the left side, sitting down was difficult due to everything dangling around my waist. We put a strap on the weapon so it could be carried over the shoulder, but with so many accessories on the right side (lunchbox, capsules on the belt), I couldn’t carry it flush against my side. The right arm was occupied by carrying the shotgun. This made opening doors and picking up items difficult. Due to the way the left arm was built, I (Cata) could barely flex my arm. Large bulky props can be difficult to carry, but it can be worsened by tons of accessories and a near immobilized arm. Gaige was not a comfortable outfit and that was partially due to build choices and some character design issues. So here we go! (note: This will be long and picture heavy.) We saw so many amazing Gaiges at PAX Prime and it was awesome seeing the different ways everyone tackled the same costume. This is just a guide to help out anyone else who may wish to cosplay her and by no means the only way to. Gaige was an amazing costume to build and wear and we certainly learned a lot from it. With PAX Prime over, we thought it would be a good time to do a prop breakdown and some thoughts and reflections on the cosplay.
